In a previous article, I talked about how you should use an evolutionary approach to your ads. You basically start with wildly different ads and run tests on them. You would notice that one performs better than the rest. You come up with variations.
However, here’s the problem. While people have successfully used that technique to make a lot of money on Facebook, they often do it in a very haphazard way. There’s really no rhyme or reason as to how they make their optimization decisions.
Often times, they would make wholesale changes to their ads that doesn’t really improve their ads’ performance. How do you know which part of the ad to optimize? How do you know how to set up your ad optimization system so you can produce greater and greater success?
The secret? Make variations on an element by element basis. Each and every ad you run is actually made up of many different elements. The most obvious element is of course, the picture that is associated with your ad. All Facebook ads have a picture. You can start there.
For your first ad campaign, you can run ten cheap tests, all using different pictures. Each of them will convert differently, assuming they convert at all. So, you pick the best performing picture. That’s one element. You keep making changes to that element.
For example, your ad campaign featured a woman with red hair. This was the best performing of the different types of women featured in your ads. You then play around with the picture.
Maybe you can crop the picture. You can come up with different angles of her face. Maybe you can come up with different compositions of the pictures. It still features the redheaded woman. You’re still dealing with the same element.
Once you run these tests and you figure out a particular variation that produces a sustainable, high-rate of clicks or conversions, you should move on to the next element which is the title of your ad. This is easier to mix up and vary compared to pictures. You play around with this.
Find the winner after several rounds of testing. How do you know the ultimate winner? When you cannot optimize its conversion rate any further, you know you’ve tapped out. So, at this point you’ve optimized the title element as well as the picture element, you then move on to the description. After that, you move on to the link and other parts of the ad.
At the end of the process, each and every element would’ve been optimized to the point that they cannot improve conversions anymore. The best part to this is you spend a fairly low amount of money because you haven’t poured your whole ad budget yet. You’re just trying to optimize the ad.
By this point, you should’ve been able to arrive at a winning ad formula or a winning combination of different ad elements. This is when you start spending a huge amount of money. If your ad has been optimized to the point that its conversion rate is predictable and high, you stand to convert a significant chunk of the paid traffic you’re going to be sending that ad.
Fail to Do This and Your FB Paid Ad Campaign Will Be a Waste
If you fail to do this one thing, your Facebook ad campaign will be a complete and total waste of time, effort, and money. It really will be. Seriously, forget about it. The results that you get at the end of that journey will probably be the exact same result as the ones that you would’ve gotten if you had not gone down that path in the first place.
The most common mistake people get with Facebook ad campaigns is to set up ads and let them rip. They don’t optimize them. They don’t even pay attention to their results. They just set up a date, let’s say $1 a day for 14 days, and then they let them rip. They have ten campaigns running at the same time, so it’s going to all cost them $140.
At the back of their minds, $140 is not that big of a deal. It’s not much money, admittedly. So, they just let them rip. It gives them an excuse to be irresponsible. Don’t do that. You can’t just place an ad and then let it go. No.
You have to monitor them day by day. In fact, your campaigns will immediately tell you which ad is a flat-out loser. It’s your responsibility to stop the campaign when it’s obvious that that ad is not going to make it. It’s not just going to happen. So, put it out of its misery. Pause the campaign. Kill the ad and then find the ones that work. You then optimize the rest of your ads.

So, how do you launch a successful Facebook paid ad campaign in the first place? Believe it or not, it has nothing to do with you being some sort of ad genius. Instead, you have to reverse engineer your competitors and come up with a standard model.
This is where you, setting up and account and liking the kind of things your target audience members generally like, come in. You kind of assume their interest profile and then you would start seeing your competitors’ ads. You should like those ads so you can see more.
Once you see as many ads as possible, you should be able to come up with a standard model. It seems like although there are many variations, they all kind of combine to a certain small range of predictable factors or elements.
You come up with a standard model. You come up with your own version. You test with a low budget. You test one ad, you’ll see immediately if it works or not, and then you create variations of that ad or you come up with many different types of ads and pick the winner. You then create variations of that and you keep running these cheap, fast tests. Each and every time you’re making variations.
Now, keep in mind that you’re going to be making variations using an elemental approach. I’ll discuss this in another article. The bottom line is you pick a winner and then you make variations. You keep testing until you find the ad that delivers the best return on investment.
It seems that if you’re going to spend very little money, this is guaranteed to produce a certain amount of results. Day after day. Week after week. Once you’re able to reach that stage, you then scale up your budget so you can pour as much traffic into that ad. If its conversion rate holds up, then you stand to make a decent chunk of cash.

They’re not doing it for their health. They’re not doing it because they have nothing else better to do. They did not just take some wild stab in the dark to come up with that freebie. The reason why that type of freebie crops up again and again is because people somehow, someway get results from that. Stick to that.

You keep running these long-term campaigns while focusing on successful ads. These lower your total campaign costs.

The bottom line is for you to keep running these ads, focusing on the best converting ones, and then keep optimizing them until you find the best results for the lowest amount of cash. You then scale up your campaign by increasing the amount of money you pay for the ads. As I mentioned previously, one of the best ways to build up your Facebook page is to not come up with original content. At least, not in the beginning. You should look at your competitors’ Facebook pages and find their very best content.
